Congratulations New Black Belts

Austin Shotokan Karate is pleased to congratulate Randy O'Brien, Simon DuMortier, and Valentin Panayatov for passing the examination for Shodan (first degree Black Belt) at this weekend's training seminar in Houston. Shodan means "first," so that passing this exam means that they have taken the first step of a life-long journey. Training continues tomorrow night at the dojo at Austin Recreation Center.

Rank Tests: Congratulations

Rank Tests at Austin Shotokan Karate

Congratulations to the following people who passed their Kyu exams today (Sunday, June 28): Tabitha Down, 7th Kyu; Valentin Panayatov, 2nd Kyu; and Randy O'Brian, 1st Kyu. They faced an extra challenge because the air conditioning was out in the Recreation Center! Our thanks to Mr. Joe Formica for administering the exams and to Jackson Keeney and Gerald for assisting.

Congratulations to Desiree Garcia, Simon DuMortier, Gerald, and Jayant Vohra on their fine efforts in Wednesday night's Kyu exams. Desiree passed to the rank of Seventh Kyu (orange belt). Simon and Gerald had good exams overall and were given some specific parts of them to work on for a retest in a month. Jayant took the test for experience only.The Fourth of July holiday shouldn't affect our class schedule. Please remember to register for the month of July at the front desk of the Rec. Center. We didn't do our end-of-the-month lunch after class today, so we'll try to do it next Sunday.

Last Wednesday, Joe Formica Sensei of Houston (a regular official at our rank tests) visited Austin Shotokan Karate. During training, Formica, sensei made recommendations in kata, kihon and kumite. Thank you Mr. Formica

Austin Shotokan Karate Kyu Exams

Austin Shotokan Karate congratulates Gerald Mendoza, Simon DuMortier, Ingrid Norton, and Valentin Panayotov for their fine effort in today's (Nov. 16, 2008) Kyu exams. Gerald Mendoza was promoted to 2nd Kyu, and Ingrid Norton, a new member, received 8th Kyu. Everyone benefited by learning about ways to improve their training and performance. Many thanks to Mr. Joe Formica for making the trip from Houston to give the exams and to Mr. Jim Riley for his invaluable help with preparation.
